Friendship can be earned with Mistria's residents. As friendships deepen, dating, and eventually marriage is possible with one of the Marriage Candidates.
Basic Mechanics
When talking to NPCs, either a gem or heart will be displayed next to their name. A heart indicates a marriage candidate. Regardless, the icon will change color depending on how close The Player is with said NPC. The Player gets closer to NPCs by increasing their Friendship Points level.
These points do not decay, nor is there any way to decrease them (unlike the Friendship Points level of Animals).
Each Friendship level (denoted by colored Hearts or Gems on their dialog box, or seen on their page in the Journal) is worth a set amount of Friendship points indicated in the table below. These points are primarily earned through gift-giving. The Player can give each character 1 gift per day. As of v0.15.3, the current maximum friendship level is 8.

Friendship points can be increased with each NPC by:
- giving a neutral, liked or loved gift (see Gifts)
- speaking to them once a day (+7 points)
Characters are planned to have Heart Events at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Hearts of friendship. For marriage candidates, during their 8 Heart Event The Player is able to choose to pursue a romantic relationship, or continue in a platonic one instead becoming Best Friends.

Heart Events
As of v0.15.3, only marriage candidates have Heart Events.
While most event's only require The Player to reach the required hearts (as well as having viewed the previous events for the respective villager), some do have extra requirements, such as having completed certain
Story Quests, or reached certain goals.
For event details see the individual marriage candidate's page.

Gifts
Each NPC has very specific tastes in what they like. Each character has a list of gifts they Love, Like and Dislike, as well as one gift they Hate. The rest of the giftable items that aren't in the aforementioned lists of a character are considered Neutral gifts.
Gifts viewed negatively by a character (Disliked, or Hated) do not decrease The Player's relationship with them, but do not award any friendship points, unless it is their Birthday, then these items will instead award 20 points.
| Gift Preference | Normal | Birthday (+20) |
|---|---|---|
| Loved | +20 | +40 |
| Liked | +10 | +30 |
| Neutral | +3 | +23 |
| Disliked | +0 | +20 |
| Hated | +0 | +20 |
Giftable Items
Not all items in Fields of Mistria can be gifted however. To check if an item can be gifted to someone simply hold the item and stand beside them. If the item can be gifted, the gifting prompt will appear on screen (default is
( g key ) on PC).
Generally the following items can be gifted:
Universally Liked and Loved Gifts
Outside of items with the
Likeable or
Lovable Infusions, Fields of Mistria does not have items that are liked / loved by everyone.
Items that can be purchased with these Infusions are:
Alternatively, after unlocking the
Lovable Cooking Skill or the
Likable Cooking Skill, The Player has a chance of cooking any food recipe with the respective Infusion.
Infusions do not override Banned Gift Rules, so a
Mocha with the
Lovable Infusion is still unable to be gifted to any children (
Dell,
Luc,
Maple), nor animals (
Dozy,
Henrietta), due to its Caffeine and Choco.
Universally Liked and Loved Gifts exceptions
As it contains caffeine,
Floral Tea can not be given to any children (
Dell,
Luc,
Maple), nor animals (
Dozy,
Henrietta).
Despite its name however,
Chicky Hot Chocolate does not contain chocolate, and so can be given to both
Dozy and
Henrietta.

Other Mechanics
For romance candidates, during their 8 Heart Event The Player is able to choose to pursue a romantic relationship, or continue in a platonic one instead becoming Best Friends. There are no limits to the number of "Best Friends" The Player can have, nor on the number of characters they can be dating.
Best Friends
Best Friends are an extension of the regular Friendship mechanics in Fields of Mistria, they will (once the Friendship Level cap is raised) continue to gain Friendship points with The Player, as well as interact with them in a platonic manner.
Certain previously available activities will no longer be available between The Player and them however (like dancing together at The
Harvest Festival).
Dating
Dating is an extension of the regular Friendship mechanics in Fields of Mistria, the character(s) that are dating The Player will (once the Friendship Level cap is raised) continue to gain Friendship points with The Player, but will now interact with them in a more romantic or flirtatious manner.
Marriage
While not currently implemented, Marriage is a planned feature of Fields of Mistria. The Player will only be able to marry one character at a time, it is not currently known if there will be a divorce mechanic or not.
Any other romances will be swapped to being Best Friends instead of dating.

History
- v0.14.1:
- 🌼Fixed NPCs from reverting to lower-level heart dialogue for one in-game day after loading.
- The journal now displays "Best Friend" instead of "Single" if The Player has chosen an NPC's "Best Friend" route during their 8 Heart Event, further clarifying the current status within each NPC's relationship page.
- v0.14.0:
- 8 Heart Events for romanceable NPCs have been added to the game! During these 8H events, The Player can choose whether to move forward as "Best Friends" or "Dating" with each. Note: Players can date multiple NPCs at the same time, but will only be able to ultimately marry one. Marriage is not in this update.
- A new Dating mechanic has been added to the game! Players will be able to take NPCs with the "Dating" status on dates each weekend. Players will also receive a Photo Card commemorating the first Date of each type. Note: To unlock Dates, players must have at least one NPC with the "Dating" status chosen. New Date types can be found and unlocked via "Date Inspiration" items.
- v0.12.0:
- Romanceable’s Six Heart Events have been added.
- You can now level up all NPCs’ heart levels to 6 hearts.
